An excellent exhibition of billiards and snooker was seen at Almondbury Conservative Club when former World Billiards Champion, Leslie Driffield, and Huddersfield’s Billiards Champion, Jack Mellor were opposed at both games. Both players were in grand form and in just over an hour 700 points were scored. Leslie made the highest break of 115 but Jack was consistent with breaks between 30 and 40 – though careless strokes robbed him of bigger breaks. At snooker, both players went for their shots and the two frames were complete within twenty minutes. Leslie demonstrated outstanding ability at this game and it is a pity he does not play more snooker. The evening was brought to a fitting conclusion with a demonstration of trick shots by Leslie.

As mentioned earlier Jack likes making notes of his achievements, and in the back of this 1952-53 handbook he has written them down. Even though it is in this handbook, I put the date down as 1956 based on the 10 Hudd note. I take this as being 10 Huddersfield championships finals, 5 snooker: 4 wins, 1 loss; and 5 billiards: 3 wins. 2 losses. The 5 Halifax is 4 billiards with 3 wins and 1 loss, and 1 snooker win. 1 ID Halifax is the Inter District championship won with Brighouse. 5 YAF, Yorkshire Area Finals for the English Amateur Championship Proper. 2 YC, Yorkshire Championships, 1 win 1 loss. 5 YIDL, Yorkshire Inter District League Championships, consecutively. 2 Blackpool, the Inter-Town competition held in Blackpool. 1 Snooker NP is the local Non Political Snooker League Championship and 1 Billiards NP is the Non Political Billiard League Championship. Along with the finals he has 2 SF Hudd SC and 3 SF Hudd BC, semi finals of the Snooker and Billiards Championships. 4 Break P Hal. B.L. are break prizes while playing in the Halifax Billiards Leagues. He still had 13 years of success after that, and would soon double the number of Huddersfield finals he would appear in.
